Basic Training

The syllabus covers the requirements of the 1978 Convention as amended including Manila Amendments Chapter VI, Section A- VI/1 paragraph 2 and Table A-VI/1-3. A trainee successfully completing this course will have a knowledge and skill of first aid sufficient to take immediate effective action upon encountering an accident, illness, or other medical emergency until the arrival of the person who is in charge of medical care, and be able to minimize risk of further harm to self and casualty at all times.
The syllabus covers the requirements of the 1995 Convention as amended including Manila Amendments Chapter VI, Section A – VI/1, paragraph 2 and Table A-VI/1-2. On meeting the minimum standard of competence in fire prevention and fire fighting, a trainee will be competent to take appropriate measures for the safety of personnel and of the ship and to use fire appliances correctly. The trainee will also have knowledge of fire prevention.
Due to the vastly different environment on a ship as compared to ashore, this course is designed to prepare new recruits for a life at sea. Working on a ship can be hazardous occupation for the uninitiated. This course will give new seafarers an insight into the various elements of a ship and working procedures on board so that they adjust to the shipboard environment, and are better prepared to cope with any unforeseen circumstances. To that extent this course is planned to make their transition from a shore to a sea career smooth and give some knowledge of ship’s working before they actually step on board a ship. A trainee successfully completing this course will be able to:
  • comply with emergency procedures
  • take precautions to prevent pollution of the marine environment
  • observe safe working practices
  • understand orders and be understood in relation to shipboard duties
  • contribute to effective human relationships on board ship
The syllabus covers the requirements of the 1978 STCW Convention and Code as amended including Manila Amendments Chapter VI, Section A-VI/1, Paragraph 2 and Table A-VI/1-1. On meeting the minimum standard of competence in personal survival techniques, a trainee will be able to survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment.
